The whole story takes place in a Medieval world, with fantasy elements such as magic and strange beings. But unlike in WoW there are no firearms.

At the very foundation of DAoC is the threeway conflict between the three Realms, Albion, Hibernia, and Midgard. And therein lies the fundamental benefit DAoC has over most other mmo's in my opinion. Because it has been designed for this conflict bottom up, it is so much more immersive and fun to take part in DAOC Platinum  pvp.

This battle is played out in the Frontier, which is a huge pvp area containing towers, keeps and magical relics which can be lost or gained.
Everyone belonging to each realm work (more or less anyway) together against the other two. Defending keeps, repairing walls, building ballistas, catapults, pouring oil on invaders, and so on.

However, you can still take part in the battle at any time even without being in a group. It may be harder, but DAOC Plat is possible.
