Video Games: Aion Mounts a Challenge to World of Warcraft

Like WOW and almost every other massively-multiplayer online game besides Eve Online (which is science-fiction-based), aion kinais set in a fantasy land of sorcerers, warriors, clerics and rogues. It is an established formula, but what generally set the various games apart are the depth of their content, the fluidity (or lack thereof) of their combat systems and the extent of exploration and story in their virtual worlds.

The open  aion kina beta runs until Sunday, and codes for admission are still available at FilePlanet. (Keep in mind that the client software is a 9 gigabyte download.) I have only been able to play this version of the beta for a few hours, but was able to spend more than 20 hours in private beta tests last month. My first impression was that aion kinah  is certainly a lot better-looking than World of Warcraft. Aion uses a more advanced graphics engine than WOW, and it shows in the lush detail of its characters and environments. I have also been impressed with how stable the client software and the game servers have been, with hardly a bug in sight.

But as gamers have learned so brutally, it is easy for a company to release a fabulous beta that only includes half the game while the second half remains relatively unfinished. Online games like Aion powerleveling and WOW are the most complicated forms of interactive electronic entertainment around, and the real verdict on Aion powerleveling will not become clear until at least two months after its release. It will take that long for enough players to reach the game’s highest levels and to find out if the game has enough content to keep them occupied for years to come. (So don’t expect a formal review of the game until November at the earliest.)

For now though, the open beta is a good place to start (and is one reason more than 300,000 people have already preordered the game). If you see an Asmodian spiritmaster, it just might be me.
